BABY SOPHIE BORN 8 LB, 12 OZ

At 34, I truly thought I was ready to have a baby, to shift my focus onto another person. Surprise! I was completely unprepared for the tidal wave of emotions that the physical aspects of my pregnancy brought out: The loss of total sovereignty over my body led me to places I wasn't sure I wanted to go.

Ultimately, those nine months turned out to be some of the most constructive and fulfilling I'd ever experienced. Along with hormone-induced giddiness, I think these photos catch the incredible bursting through to the other side of the fears and ambivalence I'd been struggling with. I remember that feeling of finally reaching where I wanted and needed to be. And luckily for me, it stayed.
